A 43-year-old habitual offender in detention under Goondas Act in the Vellore Central Prison for Men, died late on Thursday in the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital, here. He was being treated for HIV and TB.
Superintendent of the Vellore prison N Arivudainambe said Balu alias Karuppu Balu of Tiruvottiyur in Chennai was detained under Goondas Act by Ambattur Police and was imprisoned since June last year. He was undergoing treatment for HIV and TB in the prison hospital.
He was admitted to the GVMC Hospital on Dec 4 after his health deteriorated. He died around 11 pm on Thursday. Magistrate of Judicial Magistrate Court- I, Vellore, G Prabagaran conducted an inquest into his death on Friday, he said.
Balu’s body would be handed over to his family after the postmortem on Saturday, he further said.
