Nursing college head booked for harassment

A case was registered against the director of a private nursing college located in Muthupillaimandapam, Sakkottai near Kumbakonam, on charges of harassing  girl students staying in the college hostel.

The accused was identified as Marya Francis, director of the Sacred Hearts College of Nursing. Based on a complaint from a fourth-year student staying in the hostel, the Nachiyarkoil Police registered a case under section 4(1) of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women  Act, 1988, against Marya Francis on Saturday.

In her complaint to the Kumbakonam Revenue Divisional Officer, the student, a Villupuram native, alleged that the director used to visit the girls’ hostel at night and harass the inmates.

It may be noted the complainant student along with some other girls were dismissed from the college after complaining about the harassment to the authorities.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court recently set aside the dismissal orders of the students, permitting them to continue their studies. The police said Francis was absconding.
