Different yardsticks adopted for rape incidents in Delhi, TN

DMK President M Karunanidhi todayquestioned the different yardsticks being adopted by somepolitical parties for the gang rape incident in Delhi andone that took place in Tuticorin district in Tamil Nadu, inwhich a seventh class girl was allegedly raped and murdered.

"Incidents of rape cannot be accepted whether it happensin Delhi or in Tamil Nadu..When a medical student wasgang-raped in a moving bus, there was a national outcrydespite assurances from Prime Minister and UPA ChairpersonSonia Gandhi and the protest is still continuing," he said ina statement.

He accused Jayalalithaa government of not taking anyaction on the incident that happened in Tamil Nadu.

"While Prime Minister himself is issuing a statementcondemning such incidents, in Tamil Nadu, even after themurder of the girl, no Minister from the government was sentto console the family", he said.

Karunanidhi said it was "surprising" and "painful" thatsome political parties were adopting different yardsticks onincidents of sexual harassment which deserved severepunishment.

DMK would stage a protest before the District Collectorateat Tuticorin on Dec 26 condemning the incident, he said.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, Chief Minister JJayalalithaa, condemning the incident, announced a relief ofRs one lakh to the family of the girl, from the ChiefMinister's Public Relief Fund.
