Christmas was celebrated with fervour and gaiety in the Union territory on Tuesday. Special midnight mass prayers were held at churches across Puducherry with the most important being held at Immaculate Cathedral Conception Church in the heart of the town, where a large number of people took part.

People greeted each other with Christmas wishes and shared plum cakes and other delicacies. Lt Governor Iqbal Singh in his Christmas message said, “Christmas is the time for joy and prosperity, forgiveness, generosity and compassion, binding us all together in celebration. Let us all commit ourselves on this occasion to follow the message delivered by Lord Jesus Christ through his preaching.”

Chief Minister N Rangasamy said selfless devotion, compassion and love for others and dedication should be imbibed in lives and people should render selfless services.

Union Minister of State in PMO V Narayanasamy, Leader of the opposition, leaders of various political parties, ministers and MLAs too greeted the people on the occasion of Christmas.

Shops and buildings wore a decorated look on the occasion and the mood was celebratory among adults and children alike.

However, to dampen the spirits a bit, roads dug-up for laying underground sewage system made driving difficult causing traffic jams.
