‘PM’s inaction spoiled samba in delta’

Strongly backing Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s charge of Centre’s inaction on the Cauvery imbroglio, Thamizhar Desiya Iyakkam president P Nedumaran on Tuesday blamed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s delayed response to Tamil Nadu’s request for convening Cauvery River Authority meeting as the main reason for the loss of samba crops in delta districts.

“Had the PM heeded the request of Jayalalithaa to convene the CRA immediately and ordered the release of water, the loss suffered by delta farmers could have been avoided”, Nedumaran opined.

The Prime Minister alone was fully responsible for the loss of samba crops as he convened the CRA only after the Supreme Court direction and asked Karnataka to release water. However, by that time the samba crop had started to wither.  So Manmohan should own responsibility for the crop loss and the Chief Minister should demand a compensation package for farmers from the Centre.

Nedumaran also appreciated the efforts made by the Chief Minister to help Cauvery delta farmers by insuring their crops free of cost and several other measures.
