Two days after a girl was allegedly gang-raped near Manimuktha River here, police arrested six persons, including a college student, in connection with the case on Wednesday.

Cases have been registered against the accused under five sections, including IPC Section 376 (rape) and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

A police team led by DSP B Venkatesan arrested Ramachandranpettai Muthu, Sakthi, Rajasekar and Vettu Sankar of Nachiyarpettai, Elumalai of Pazhamalainathar Nagar and the college student who was a minor.

Police said they were on the look out for Murugan of Vandipalayam, Sathish of Puducherry and two others, who were on run.

All the six arrested were produced before a court and were lodged in jail.

The 23-year-old girl was allegedly raped by the gang on Monday evening. The girl came to the river bank

to see one of her relatives, Backiyaraj, when a few people passing by attacked the duo.  Some of the gang members pinned down Backiyaraj, while the others allegedly raped the girl.

In a statement to the police, the girl said that while three persons raped her, the others kept Backiyaraj at bay. As soon as the gang left, the girl ran to a bus stand and narrated the incident to the people there. They informed 108 ambulance service and sent the girl to Vriddhachalam Government Hospital. The girl was currently undergoing treatment at Mundiyampakkam Government Medical College Hospital.
