Pondy votes to French Assembly

French citizens based in Puducherry cast their votes in the first round of polls to the National Assembly of France to elect representatives to parliament.

French citizens abroad are electing 11 “députés” (Members of Parliament or MPs) in the first round of polls. The second round will be held on June 17.

The 11th constituency comprises Asia, Oceania and Russia and covers 49 counties including India.

There are 20 candidates in fray for the elections from the 11th constituency, including two from Puducherry -- Alavandane Ramakichanane and Mouhamed Idris. Another Puducherry-origin candidate, Peria, is based in France.

The candidate who gets 12.5 per cent of the total registered votes will contest in the next round.

As many as 5,116 Franco-Indians are registered with the Consulate General of France in Puducherry. The French National Assembly has 577 elected members.
