Charge memo against cop quashed

The Madras High Court has quashed a charge memo issued against a constable for allegedly playing cards for money while he was on medical leave.

Justice V Dhanapalan allowed the petition filed by N Sundar and directed the Inspector General of Police, South Zone, Madurai to reinstate him in service within eight weeks. Sundar, who was working as constable of Armed Reserve, Madurai city, was arrested by Thirunagar police on July 5, 2011, as he was playing cards for stakes along with 9 others. They were, however,  released on the same day.

Thereafter he was placed under suspension from July 7, 2011. He challenged the criminal proceedings and the HC in August 2011 quashed the FIR. He sent a representation to revoke his suspension. As there was no response, he moved the court, which directed the authorities to consider and dispose of his representation. While so, he was issued with the impugned charge memo dated October 3, 2011.
