Picasso of India honoured on his death anniversary

A year has passed since MF Husain’s death, and his die-hard fans still look up to him. Firos PK, an artist from Vadakara in Calicut district of Kerala, chose to remember him by painting a fitting tribute in the style of the great artist himself.

An art exhibit featuring replicas of nine of Husain’s untitled paintings, apart from a few originals by Firos, was organised at the Radisson Blu in Egmore. The exhibition was inaugurated by ace director Priyadarshan and actor Narain. Director Mysskin too made an appearance.

Firos, speaking of the inspiration behind his tribute to his idol, in a painting called Misunderstanding, says, “Husain and his art were not comprehended during his lifetime.” The painting features Husain dressed in white and seated on the floor holding a paintbrush. Surrounding him are teacups filled with paint with steam rising from them. “They signify that his art was always the hottest topic around,” said the young artist.

It is common knowledge that Husain wished to paint actress Vidya Balan, but it never materialised. Carrying on the wishes of the Picasso of India, Firos has also painted two portraits of the Bollywood diva in her The Dirty Picture avatar. Visitors to the exhibit appreciated the bold brushwork, and some paintings were sold during the course of the day.
