Physical fitness tests for the recruitment of 640 constables for the Puducherry police force were kicked off at the Pondicherry Armed Police (PAP) ground in Gorimedu on Monday.

DIG (Administration) I D Shukla said 444 candidates out of a total of 600 (who were issued call letters), turned up for the test.

At the end of day one, at least 146 candidates cleared the tests for the next stage of the selection process. The tests would continue till June 23.

Explaining that there was no manual intervention in the process and that the test result of each candidate was directly fed into the computer, Shukla said the entire selection process was transparent.

After verification of certificates and a basic physical assesment, candidates were allowed to undergo the fitness tests that include a 800 m race, long jump, high jump and 100 m race.

Shukla said every candidate’s timing and other measurements were noted with precision using electronic devices. The tests would also be recorded using CCTV cameras, he added.

Out of a total of 9,403 applicants, only 7,268 candidates (5,518 males and 1,750 females) were found eligible for the physical efficiency tests and the remaining applications were rejected on various grounds.
