Farmers from the Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam have lauded the announcement  of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa regarding the three phase power supply for Kuruvai cultivation.

Farmers, who were elated by the announcement, expressed the hope that Jayalalithaa’s decision would certainly ensure a decent harvest in the delta region.  “Despite severe power crisis, the CM has taken a logical decision keeping the future in mind,” said Mahendran a farmer near Kumbakonam.

Even farmers who had motor pump sets were left in the lurch owing to the power crisis in the State.

Around 70,000 hectares in Thanjavur district will benefit from the increased duration of continuous power supply. In Thanjavur district, there are several farms with motor pump sets in Kumbakonam, Papanasam, and Thirupanadal areas.

During the previous farmers’ grievances meeting in the delta districts, farmers had demanded continuous electricity supply and also increase in the duration of power availability.

A section of farmers in Tiruvarur, while expressing their gratitude to the Chief Minister, said that they would be able to reap a decent Kuruvai harvest this year despite the delay in release of Cauvery water.
