Rowdy’s parents held for threatening man

Katpadi Police arrested the parents of a notorious rowdy, Maha alias Mahalingam on Thursday, on charges of threatening a 34-year-old man. Hari Pandurangan (61) and Keezhi Amma (55), residents of Vaduganthangal, were arrested for threatening Jai Dilipan of Anpundi village.

The couple threatened him after he asked them to walk on the road side on Gudiyattam-Katpadi Road on Thursday afternoon. They allegedly threatened Dilipan stating that they are the parents of Maha. The couple also said that Dilipan would face dire consequences, if he dares to speak against them.

Police have registered a case under section 294 (b) and 506 (1) against them.

Mahalingam is wanted in five murder cases. He is also the prime accused in the brutal murder of John Segar, who was the public relations officer at the CMC Hospital. Police is also on the lookout for Mahalingam for murdering one of his associates Bharath two weeks ago at old Katpadi.

Elderly Murdered Over Gold: Man Held

Gudiyattam police arrested a 52-year-old man on Thursday for allegedly murdering a 65-year-old woman for gold. Gouramma, wife of Munusamy and a resident of Sanakuttai, was found murdered in a coconut grove at Sempalli village on Wednesday afternoon. Her gold ear stud and thali worth `18,000 were found missing.

The police grew suspicious over Ravi, an agricultural labourer working at farmer Dhandapani’s land who was missing since the murder. Police arrested him on Thursday at the foothills of Sempalli hills. On interrogation, Ravi confessed to strangling Gouramma to death.

“Ravi desperately needed money for his daughter’s Valaikappu ceremony,” said the police. “He asked for `4,000 from his employer Dhandapani for the function, but did not receive it till Wednesday afternoon.” “Ravi decided to rob jewels from the elderly lady, who had come to the grove,” said the police. Gouramma, used to frequent the coconut grove to collect dry leaves to make broomsticks.

“He hit her with a coconut and strangled her to death,” police said.

After removing the deceased’s jewels, Ravi fled from the spot. The police registered a murder case and the court had remanded Ravi to the Vellore Central Prison for Men.
