CHENNAI: The Tamil Virtual University, which offers a wide range of certificate and degree programmes in Tamil studies through the Internet, is likely to start courses that will be taught in French from the next semester. Currently, the University, which has close to 11,000 students registered for the programmes from across the globe, is offering the courses to students in English.

Director of the University, P R Nakkeeran, told Express that the demand for teaching in French has been growing for some time with the number of students from Europe increasing. This apart, there were many French expatriates settled in Puducherry who have shown keen interest in taking up certificate courses if teaching is offered in their language.

He said that the only constraint that was holding the University back from launching the courses in French was experts well versed in French and Tamil. However, the courses are likely to be launched from the next semester, he said.

The Director also said that the University will move into “real time” class mode from next semester, where teaching will take place over video conferencing in the new studio that is now under construction.
