TIRUNELVELI: People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) coordinator S P Udayakumar on Sunday condemned Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s demand that Kerala’s share of power from the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant Project (KKNPP) be increased.

Recently, Chandy had demanded that 500 MW of power produced at the KKNPP be allocated to Kerala.

Speaking to Express, Udayakumar said Kerala’s  “legal share” from the KKNPP was only 266 MW.

However, Chandy had asked for a higher share of power from the plant, which is situated in Tamil Nadu, he said, while asking whether Chandy would be ready to ask for a nuclear plant in his own state. On the ongoing anti-KKNPP hunger strike, Udayakumar said that the condition of the 302 women who were observing a fast at Idinthakari, was deteriorating. Two of the 35 male protestors were down with viral fever while six women from Idinthakarai and Koodankulam were rushed to a hospital after they collapsed, the PMANE leader said.

On Sunday, MDMK propoganda secretary Nanjil Sampath also participated in the hunger strike, he added.

As the government was not considering their plight, villagers from Idinthakari and Koodankulam would surrender their Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) cards on Tuesday, he said.
