COIMBATORE: Burglars allegedly decamped with Rs 5 lakh from the office of a private company located just a few metres from a police station here on Sunday night. According to police, the burglars sawed the iron grill of a window to gain entry into the office of Jayachandra Bearing India Private Limited situated on Avinashi Road near the Uppilipalayam signal.

A police officer said, “The burglars scaled a nearby building and from there, they cut the grill of a window to gain entry into the first floor of the company’s office. They then broke a glass door and entered the second floor, where the cash box was kept.” Although CCTVs were installed in the office, they were of little use as the images were not recorded properly since all the lights were switched off, police said.

“We could only see the silhouette of the burglars moving. But, from the images it is clear that the burglars had clear knowledge about the interiors of the office.

They also seemed to have prior knowledge about the location of the cash box. They spent only about 30 minutes to carry out the loot,” the police officer said. On Monday, police started collecting the details of the ex-employees of the company. They were also questioning some of the current staff in connection with the incident.

Sources pointed out that while the day’s collection amount was usually deposited in the bank every day, it would be kept in the office only on Saturdays and Sundays, when the banks would be closed. The burglars seemed to be aware of this and struck precisely on Sunday night, the sources said.

The burglary came to light on Monday morning,  when a maintenance staff opened the office to clean it. On information, the Race Course police rushed to the spot and forensic experts scanned the premises.  Police suspect the involvement of three persons in the burglary.A special police team has been formed.
