POLLACHI: In a tragic incident two youth from Chennai drowned in the Aliyar River on Saturday

According to sources, V Gowthaman (22), a B Tech graduate and S Ramesh (25), an employee of a private construction company in Velachery, both from Chennai, had come to Coimbatore with their relatives and then left for Aliyar on Saturday. Both went for a bath in the Aliyar, 25 km from here, and were caught in a whirlpool. A few others who were bathing in the vicinity tried to save the duo, but in vain. The youth were dragged deep into the river and drowned.

On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies of both the youth with the help of local fishermen

Anamalai Inspector Jayaraman told Express that the duo must have entered the restricted area without noticing the caution banner put up at the spot.

According to police sources, at least 250 persons have drowned in the river at this spot in the last decade.
