VELLORE: Issues of drainage water getting mixed with drinking water and the delay in restoring street lights topped the list of grievances at the Vellore Corporation Council meeting held at the Corporation office on Tuesday. An emergency meeting was also convened along with the Council meeting and 65 resolutions, including three resolutions from the emergency meeting, were passed.

Most of the councillors raised the issue of drainage water getting mixed with drinking water in the pipelines. Ward 51 councillor Venugopal said, “Damages have occurred at many points in the main pipelines and the drainage water gets mixed with drinking water. This contaminated water is supplied to people through the individual pipelines at every house.”

Shakila, councillor of Ward 27, said, “The system in our area is such that there is no outlet for the common drainage water. The drain has a reverse flow into all the houses via the pipelines and enters the houses posing health hazard.”

Member of Ward 33 Thavamani said that nearly 64 street lights had failed to work in her area and added that she was not able to set right the issue of drainage water contaminating drinking water as no private persons could be engaged in this type of works.

The meeting also witnessed a wordy duel between AIADMK and DMK councillors when an AIADMK councillor Duraiarasan of Ward 58 showed pictures of poor quality roads that were laid in his area, Sampath Nagar, during the last regime.

Deputy Mayor Dharmalingam, Commissioner Seeni Ajmal Khan and Engineer Devakumar were present.
