TIRUPUR: A woman snatched an eight-sovereign gold chain from an elderly woman after spraying chilly powder in the eyes of the victim near Dharapuram on Tuesday.

Police said that Muthulakshmi (65), a resident of Ammanyankattu Thottam at Mettuvalasu in Polari village near Dharapuram,on Tuesday evening was walking towards her home on Mulanur-Dharapuram road. A couple, who came by a bike, stopped close to her. The woman, who was on the pillion, approached Muthulakshmi in the guise of asking for some address and diverted her attention.

The woman suddenly sprayed chilli powder in the eyes of Muthulakshmi and snatched her chain of 8 sovereigns and fled the spot in the bike with the man.

Following a complaint, the Mulanur police registered a case and are investigating.
