Encroachments which had been constructed over drainage lines near Kosapet were cleared on Wednesday, by officials of the civic body.

More than 100 houses located in Kosatheru near Kosapet were found to have either constructed steps or fixed slabs to bridge the road and the house.

The encroachments were built across the drainage lines that are present on both sides of the street, to carry rainwater, the officials said.

The rainwater from nearby Saidapet hill flowed through Old Town, Saidapet and Salavanpet areas towards Kosapet, which is located on a low-lying area.

The steps connecting the houses to roads had affected the free flow of rainwater along the drainage lines as they had covered the drainage lines, making it difficult for the workers to desilt them, the officials said.

The blockage of the drainage lines also resulted in mosquito breeding and this would pave the way for spread of diseases during the rainy season, they added. In order to ensure free flow of rainwater, the encroachments were cleared on Wednesday with an earthmover.

Officials said the owners of the buildings had constructed steps along the full stretch of the house.

The encroachments were cleared, leaving four feet width of steps at the entrance of the houses, to take the two-wheelers inside.
