Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today said a statue of Kongu chieftain Kalingarayan, would be set up in Erode district and the Kalingarayan anicut, built by him, converted into a tourist spot.
"Acceding to the request made by the local people, hailing the developmental works done by Kalingarayan in developing the region, a statue will be set up at Nasuvampalayam in Erode district", Jayalalithaa said in a official release.
The Kalingarayan Anicut area would be converted into a tourist spot, she said.
Though it was sufficient for setting up a canal in a 32-mile long area between Bavani and Noyyal river, Jayalalithaa said a 56-mile long canal had been built (by Kalingarayan) to ensure that more land becomes suitable for irrigation.
Currently, 15,743 acres in Erode district get irrigated by this canal, she said.
