Four persons, including a sub-inspector of police, were injured in a clash that broke out between two religious groups at Alagankulam near Devipattinam on Monday.

Four persons, including a sub-inspector of police, were injured in a clash that broke out between two religious groups at Alagankulam near Devipattinam on Monday.

Police said persons belonging to a particular community, were conducting a street corner meeting at Alagankulam, when two persons belonging to another religion, reportedly passed comments. This infuriated those conducting the meeting who chased away the duo.

After the incident, both groups gathered on the main road and started pelting stones at each other. Three persons - Mohamed Baris, Umaya Selvam and Muruganantham were injured.

A police team, which rushed to the spot also came under attack. Muthuselvan, an SI of Devipattinam police station, sustained injuries, following which police chased away the mob.

Normalcy returned by evening with a large posse of personnel posted in the area. DSP Muralidharan convened a peace meeting in which leaders of both groups urged police not to allow such meetings and also promised to maintain peace.
