The Vellore Citizens’ Welfare Forum, while welcoming the closure of Sterlite Copper smelter industry at Thoothukudi, has appealed for strict implementation of norms for preventing environmental and health disasters in the region.
VCWF noted that the district administration of Thoothukudi had failed to make periodical inspection of the plant. The Forum expressed shock as to why the Ecology Prevention and Payment of Compensation Authority, constituted by the Centre, had not closed down the industry earlier.
