SFI cadre fume over leader’s death, 20 held

Twenty Students Federation of India (SFI) activists were arrested for protesting against the death of a student belonging to the organisation in West Bengal while he was in police custody.

Twenty Students Federation of India (SFI) activists were arrested for protesting against the death of a student belonging to the organisation in West Bengal while he was in police custody.

The police arrested the students after they attempted to burn the effigies of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee near Periyar statue. Cases were charged against four of the activists under various sections. The protest demonstration was held as part of a nation- wide stir.

According to reports, a 23-year-old SFI leader Sudipto Gupta succumbed to head injuries after police rounded him up during a law-violation programme in Kolkata. SFI activists alleged that the police had beaten up Sudipto while he and 30 others were being taken to the Presidency jail in a private bus.
