Rape accused attacks CB-CID sleuth with sickle in Tirupur

A head constable of the CB-CID wing of Madurai suffered serious injuries on the head after he was attacked with a sickle by a rape accused near Tirupur during the wee hours of Thursday.

Police said that Dhivakaran (25), a native of Theni district, was an accused in the rape and murder of a woman at Rayappampatti in Theni district in 2011.

Dhivakaran, who was let out on bail last year, did not appear for the trial in the case that was being held in the judicial magistrate court I in Theni. He was hiding at Sirupooluvapatti near Tirupur with his wife Pavithra and was working as a daily wage labourer.

Meanwhile a team of Maduri CB-CID unit, including SI Baskaran, head constables Chennuraj and Kannuraj, which obtained a warrant from the JM court to arrest him, got a tip-off that he was hiding in Tirupur district.

Following this, the team went to Sirupoolupatti around 1 am on Thursday. After inquiries with neighbours, the  team traced his house and knocked the door. Dhivakaran on seeing the team pulled out a sickle and attacked Chennuraj. When the team was shocked by the sudden attack, Dhivakaran utilised the situation and fled the spot.

Chennuraj, who sustained severe injuries on the head, was rushed to a private hospital in Tirupur. Police have taken his wife Pavithra for inquiry. Further investigations are on.
