8 held, SUVs, mobiles seized as cops bust gambling den

A team of police personnel led by inspector of Gudiyattam town station, Govindasamy, conducted a check near a water tank at Santhapettai around 10 am and found Gopi (39), Gopalakrishnan (48), Siva (36) Manohar (43), Kumar (49), Madhavan (29) and Srinivasan (30), all residents of Gudiyattam town, gambling.

They were arrested and booked under Section 5 and 7 of Lottery Act read with 420 and 120 (b) of IPC and were remanded to the Vellore Central Prison for Men. Police also confiscated three SUV cars, three laptops, 10 mobile phones, a printer, three data cards and  `36,975 cash from them.

Police said they had been conducting frequent raids following the direction from the Inspector General of Police of North Zone P Kannan, to check illegal activities

1 held for murder

Kalavai police on Friday arrested a 30-year-old man on charges of murdering his brother-in-law over a family dispute. The deceased was identified as Settu (42) of Chenganavarnam. He was an alcoholic and used to often quarrel with his wife.

Eswari’s brother Elumalai (30) went to Settu’s house on Thursday and found him in an inebriated condition. When Elumalai advised him to stop drinking and harassing his sister, the duo got into a heated argument and came to blows. Elumalai grabbed a log and attacked Settu who sustained grievous injuries and was shifted to the GH in Chennai. He succumbed to injuries in the early hours of Friday. Police registered a case of murder against Elumalai and arrested him.
