The District Crime Branch (DCB) police on Friday arrested two women - Sahaya Stella and Jeniffer Diana of Muthupettai - for allegedly misappropriating the loan amount of some self-help groups (SHGs) operating from different places in the district.
DCB sources said, Sahul Hameed of Keelakarai, zonal officer of the Gulf of Mannar Bio-sphere Reserve Trust (GOMBRT), lodged a complaint with Mylvahanan, SP, against a woman and her daughter for misappropriating funds meant for SHGs.
The GOMBRT had given funds for some select women self help groups of various coastal villages to launch an alternate employment Sahaya Stella was engaged to collect the loan amount from the SHG members of Indira Nagar, Periyapattinam, Therkku Pudukudieruppu and Muthupettai. She was directed to deposit the collection amount in a bank at Regunathapuram.
Meanwhile, she had given the collection amount to her daughter Jenifer Diana to deposit the amount. However, she had allegedly misappropriated the collection amount of `4 lakh.
