AIADMK man's car runs amok, one killed

A woman was killed and five others were injured when the car of an AIADMK functionary ploughed through the public after hitting a bus stop near Korampallam bus stand here on Sunday.

A woman was killed and five others were injured when the car of an AIADMK functionary ploughed through the public after hitting a bus stop near Korampallam bus stand here on Sunday.

Raj Narayanan, Arumuganeri Panchayat vice president, was travelling in his car towards Thoothukudi. Sources said that when the car was nearing Korampallam bus stand, a two-wheeler suddenly crossed the road. To avoid hitting the two-wheeler, the driver applied brakes but could not stop the car. It ran out of control and rammed the bus stop.

In the accident, Roslin of Korampallam died on the spot and five others, Jeyarani, her son Muthuganesh, Veerasamy, Suresh and Sendurapandian, were seriously injured. They were admitted to the Thoothukudi Government Hospital. Raj Narayanan, the car driver and his assistant were also injured and were treated at the Thoothukudi GH.

When the news of the accident spread, people of Korampallam resorted to a road blockade demanding speed breakers to be set up near the Korampallam bus stand. Thoothukudi ASP Mahesh rushed to the spot and held talks with the agitators. The ASP told the people that Thoothukudi Collector had powers to look into their demands and asked them to submit a petition to the Collector. Later, the people withdrew their protest.
