Woman attempts suicide after poisoning daughters

Unable to withstand the harassment and torture by her drunkard husband, a 35- year-old woman poisoned her three daughters and also attempted suicide by consuming the poison at their house in Kezhilpudhupettai village near Walajapet on Monday.

Munusamy, a coolie and a resident of Kezhilpudhupettai village, was an alcoholic for the past few years. His wife Anjanalakshmi had been dissuading him from consuming liquor but in vain. The couple had frequent fights over this issue, the police said.

On Monday morning, Anjanalakshmi decided to end her life after poisoning her daughters. She gave poison-laced cool drinks to her last three daughters Bavana (7), Soundarya (3) and Srimathi (2), and also consumed it herself. On seeing this, Anjanalakshmi’s elder daughter Souchalya (11) rushed to their neighbours and cried for help,  police added. The neighbours immediately took them to the GH in Walajapet. After first aid, they were referred to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital where they were admitted.

Police said the doctors declared that the children and her mother were out of danger and had been shifted to the general ward from Intensive Care Unit.
