Thanjavur, Dindigul to get corporation status

In a series of major administrative announcements for 2013-14, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday declared that Dindigul and Thanjavur municipalities would be upgraded to corporations in view of their growing population and revenue. Furthermore, Karaikudi and Sivakasi would be upgraded from special grade to selection grade.

The CM also announced the creation of a TN Municipal Accounts Service to maintain the accounts and finances of corporations and municipalities.

Announcing a number of drinking water projects, the CM said a `450 crore Integrated Drinking Water Supply Project (IDWSP) would be launched to benefit 5.62 lakh people in Dindigul district while a `125 crore IDWSP would benefit 5.76 lakh in Thanjavur. Other projects include a `114.25 crore IDWSP to benefit 1.55 lakh people in 134 rural habitations of Coimbatore, a `76.44 lakh project to benefit 2.8 lakh people in Tirupur and Erode and a `32 crore IDWSP in Tiruchy district.
