Former Senior Superintendent of Police Srikanth cremated with police honours

Former Senior Superintendent of Police of Puducherry B Srikanth, who died following a cardiac arrest in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, was cremated at Karuwadikuppam here on Thursday evening.

The mortal remains, which reached here in the afternoon, were taken in a procession to the funeral ground. Chief Minister N Rangasamy, Rajya Sabha member P Kannan, opposition leader V Vaithilingam, ministers P Rajavelu, Panneerselvam and top police officials led the funeral procession, which started around 4.30pm.

The body was cremated with police honours and the last rites were performed by the late IPS officer’s son Anish Gautam  around 5.30 pm.

Earlier, people from all walks of life had been to his house at Lawspet and paid their last respect. 

So did Inspector General of Police Ranveer Singh Krishnia, Dy IG, I D Shukla, SSPs Parvez Ahamed, R A Sanjeev, Superintendents of Police S Ramaraj, T Bairavasamy, and Pazhanivel. The Director General of Police of Andaman and top officials of Tamil Nadu were also present.

Srikanth, who  was conferred IPS by the Union government was posted at Andaman and Nicobar Islands last year. He died of cardiac arrest on Wednesday morning. Union Minster V Narayanasamy visited the police officer’s family and expressed condolence on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, at Port Blair a condolence ceremony was solemnized on Thursday morning before his body was airlifted to his home town in Puducherry.

Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM along with the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police (i/c) and senior civil and police officers of the administration laid wreaths.

Farewell of arms was presented by an armed contingent of A&N Police followed by observance of two minutes silence in memory of the departed soul.

Dr B Srikanth, IPS, was working as Superintendent of Police, Nicobar District since May 2012.

He joined the Pondicherry Police Service on February 15,1990 and was inducted into IPS in 2005.

He has served for more than 23 years in Police department on various posts, including a stint in Intelligence Bureau, and was appreciated for his outstanding professional competence on every occasion.

For his commendable service,  Srikanth was awarded the President’s Police Medal for meritorious service on the occasion of Republic Day-2012.
