Man dead in sectarian clash

A 27-year-old man was murdered during a clash between two sects of a religious group in Veppampattu near Vellore on Friday evening.

Police said, in a meeting that was convened at a place of worship in Veppampattu on Friday to select a person to head a religious post, a clash broke out between followers of two separate sects who demanded the post to be given to a representative of their respective sect.

Police said that the members of the two sects were involved in a clash, which led to the murder of one Ilias (27), belonging to one of the sects.

Ilias was taken to the Vellore Government Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Vellore Taluk police have registered a case.

Vellore Deputy Superintendent of Police Dhakshinamoorthy said that police were holding inquiries with seven persons. The Vellore Taluk Police deployed strength near the mosque to prevent any further outbreak of violence.
