Patients panicked at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai on Saturday after a nurse inadvertently switched on the valve of an oxygen regulator inside the intensive care unit to maximum flow, leading to a small blast that released large amounts of oxygen.

According to sources, the incident occurred as the nurse was connecting tubes on the apparatus to provide oxygen to a patient at the critical medical care unit (ward 115).

Although no one was harmed in the incident, there was panic among patients in the ICU.
