A 46-year-old man and his parents were arrested on Monday after his wife lodged a complaint of dowry harassment against them at the All Women Police Station (AWPS) in Dindigul Town.

According to police, Sahit Batsha of Sirungerinagar near Mettupatti, married Anitha Parvin (37) in 1996. Although her family had given 50 sovereigns of gold jewellery and `50,000 cash as dowry, Batsha’s family started torturing Anitha, demanding another `50,000 and five sovereigns. They allegedly assaulted her and denied her food with Batsha even taking away her ornaments about two weeks ago. Anitha decided to lodge a police complaint after Batsha’s family threatened her with death.

On Monday, personnel of AWPS arrested Batsha, his father Mohammed Anwar (61) and mother Nisha Begum (58) under the provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
