Assistance for victims of Lankan Navy attacks

Chief minister N Rangasamy on Tuesday announced financial assistance for the families of  33 Karaikal fishermen who were assaulted by Sri Lankan Navy personnel.

Chief minister N Rangasamy on Tuesday announced financial assistance for the families of  33 Karaikal fishermen who were assaulted by Sri Lankan Navy personnel.

As per the announcement made by the Chief Minister, the families of seven fishermen  injured in attack by the Sri Lankan Navy on April 12 while fishing in Kodiakarai area, who were hospitalised (six in Karaikal Government Hospital, and one in JIPMER), would be given `15,000 each from Chief Minister’s relief fund.

Moreover, each of the  families of 26 fishermen, who were taken into custody by the Sri Lankan Navy on April 5, would be given `10,000 each.

Rangasamy had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and External Affairs Minister Salman Kurshid to take immediate steps for the release of 26 arrested fishermen. He had contacted Kurshid over phone in this regard.
