First state-level paralympic swimming contest in July

The first-ever state level paralympic swimming competition is scheduled to be held at SDAT aquatic complex at Velachery on July 21.

At a press conference here on Thursday, Paralympic Swimming Association of Tamil Nadu (PSATN) president Dr K Rema Devi and general secretary P Madhavi Latha said the move comes after the successfully held ‘Ripples Chennai 2012’ - the 12th National Paralympics Swimming and Water polo Championship here last year. “We feel a growing need for strengthening the state-level paralympics team in order to prepare a full-fledged team for the National Paralympic Swimming and Water Polo Championship 2013 scheduled to be held in Bangalore in October/November this year,” they said. “Hence, we are planning to conduct an intra-state competition wherein participants from various parts of TN can attend a selection process.”

Swimmers will be grouped as sub-juniors, juniors and seniors for the male and female categories separately. Winners will be selected for the national championship. Participants must give their names to the association in the prescribed format before June 20. Entry to the competition is free and PSATN will arrange breakfast, lunch and evening tea on the day of the event. Participants will have to make their own arrangements to arrive at the venue on the scheduled date and time, they said.
