Rowdy, doctor extort money from college students, held

A rowdy and a doctor were arrested by the Kirumambakkam police on Saturday for allegedly threatening and extorting money from three third year NRI students of a private medical college here.

According to police, rowdy Kosa Kumar (30) and Mervin Leo (26), working as a doctor in a Primary Health Centre (PHC) were arrested  following a complaint from the students- Vinoth, Sakthikumaran and Gautam, hailing from Malaysia and Singapore.

The duo threatened the students over phone saying that they were responsible for the death of Rajasekar, a senior student of the same medical college. Rajasekar was found dead under mysterious circumstances on April 5. The students were told that this would be intimated to the police and were asked to turn up at a nearby place. When the duo attempted to extort more money from the students, they informed the matter to their parents and sought the help of the police. The police traced the culprits with the help of the telephone calls and nabbed them. The jewels and some cash taken from the students were recovered from the culprits and the vehicle used for taking the students was also seized.
