Ex-Al Umma cadre held for Kumari attack

In a major breakthrough in the case of attack on BJP state unit functionary M R Gandhi, police arrested a former Al-Umma activist of Melapalayam here on Tuesday.

On Sunday, while Gandhi was taking a morning stroll on Ranithottam Road here, he was hacked by a four-member gang. Passers-by rescued Gandhi and admitted him to a private hospital. Following the attack, BJP cadre observed a one day bandh, which completely shut down the district, on Monday.

Four special teams that were formed to investigate the case nabbed a man, allegedly a former member of the banned Al Umma, from Melapalayam in Tirunelveli district in connection with the attack on Gandhi. The arrested person has been identified as K Mohammed Salin (31) of Aasuran East Street in Melapalayam in Tirunelveli district

Of the four accused in the case one was from Melapalayam, who was arrested on Tuesday, and the rest were from Kanyakumari district. A hunt is on to arrest the other three, said N Manivannan, Superintendent of Police, told Express.
