Gang, municipal staff held for beating couple

Five youth and a 33-year-old conservancy worker of Namakkal municipality were arrested here on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a couple following a tiff with one of their neighbours.

Five youth and a 33-year-old conservancy worker of Namakkal municipality were arrested here on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a couple following a tiff with one of their neighbours.

Police said that Gandhi, a habitual drunkard of Uthamapalayam on Tiruchengode-Namakkal road, used to create nuisance frequently in his area. Many times in the past he had also picked up fights with neighbours. Once in an inebriated condition Gandhi  picked up an altercation with Seenivasan.

Irked over this, Seenivasan employed a gang to attack and teach a lesson to Gandhi. As planned on Tuesday night, the gang members entered into the house of Gandhi and thrashed him. The gang did not spare Gandhi’s wife Poongodi too, the inspector stated.

The couple sustained injuries and were undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital here.

Based on a complaint lodged by Poongodi, the Nallipalayam police booked the gang along with Seenivasan, a conservancy worker with the Namakkal municipality,

The gang members identified as S Nallendran (22), K Ranjit (20), S Sampathkumar (19), K Dharma (24), and S Gopinath (19) were arrested along with R Seenivasan (33) on Wednesday on the charges of assaulting Gandhi and his wife Poongodi.
