Jewels stolen from grocer’s house

In a daylight robbery some unidentified persons have decamped with 52 sovereigns of jewels and `1.15 lakh in cash from the house of a grocery shop owner here on Wednesday.

Police said that the theft occurred when the inmates were away from the house on different work.

While Sakthivel (35), a grocery shop owner, his wife Sathya and son Shyam went to their relative’s house at Kumalankuttai in the district, his parents Samiyappan and Samiyathal had gone to take care of the grocery shop in a nearby area.

Since there was a heavy downpour in the town from 4 to 4.30 pm the streets were deserted and the burglars utilised this to commit the robbery

After rain the stopped, the inmates returned home around 6 pm and were shocked to see the doors broken open. When they checked, 52 sovereigns of jewels and `1.15 lakh in cash were found missing from the bureau. Cops however put the estimate of stolen jewels at 17 sovereigns. But inmates of the house confirmed that 52 sovereigns and `1.15 lakh cash were stolen.
