Scuffle in bus snowballs to group clash

A minor scuffle in a bus turned into a violent group clash near Swamimalai in Thanjavur district on Tuesday night, leaving two people injured.

According to police, a group of youth including Prabhakaran, Veerapathiran, J Ilayaraja (23) and Manikandan from the Manavalanpettai area of Sundaraperumal koil village picked up a  quarrel with the conductor of a private bus on Tuesday night near Sundaraperumal koil.

R Purusothaman (30) of the same village tried to mediate and pacify both the parties. As those quarreled with the conductor did not take it in right spirit and reportedly attacked Purusothaman and abused him by his caste name.

After the incident, when all of them alighted from the bus at Sundaraperumal koil bus stop, Purusothaman allegedly gathered his supporters and dragged some of the youth from Prabakharan group into his street and attacked them.

In the attack D Ranjit Kumar (19) of Atrangarai street of Sundaraperumal koil and Sethuraman (19) of the same village were injured and admitted to Thanjavur Medical college hospital.

A police team rushed to the spot and registered a case under various sections of Indian Penal Code, including section 307 (attempt to murder) . Purusothaman (30), P Muthu alias Manuneethi Cholan (21), Rajini and Rajendran (44) of a group have been arrrested and police are also on the lookout for five others.
