Jewels, silver coins worth Rs 5 lakh looted from house

Robbers struck at the house of a businessman in Vellore’s Krishna Nagar on Thursday night and decamped with diamond and gold jewels, and silver coins, worth around `5 lakh.

The incident occurred between 6.30 pm and 8.30 pm, when the house owner Vinod Kumar’s wife Rajakumari and their house maid had gone to a beauty parlour at Tollgate, police said.

Rajakumari, who returned around 8.30 pm, tried to open the main door of the  house but was unable to. She went to the back of the house and found that the backdoor had been broken open. She found that three diamond jewels, 15 sovereigns of gold jewels, 100 silver coins and Rs 50,000 in cash had been stolen from the bureau, police added.

On receiving the information, police officials pressed the fingerprint and forensic experts into action to lift  evidence from the house to track down the burglars. Vellore South police registered a case and are investigating further.
