Stir by ward members for river water

Four councillors, including three from the AIADMK and one from the Congress party held a protest allegedly by staying at the meeting hall overnight, after the Tirupathur Municipal council meeting, held on Tuesday. They demanded that water be supplied to their wards from Thenpennai river.

During the meeting, four councillors– Boopathy (ward 34), Saravanan (ward 3), Taj Mohammed (ward 6) of AIADMK, and Nedumaran (ward 13) of Congress – complained that water from Thenpennai was being supplied to 31 other wards but not to their wards. They also alleged that the municipality chairman was being partial.

Municipal chairman Arasu said,“The wards under the councillors who protested were recently added to the municipality. Hence diverting the river water to these wards was not possible. The river water currently was being supplied to the 31 wards only once a week.”

Steps would be taken to sink bore wells in their wards, he said and added that these areas would be covered under the Cauvery Integrated Drinking Water Scheme. The councillors withdrew their protest on Wednesday around 1.30 pm after chairman Arasu and commissioner Sardhar assured them of action.
