Drainage work to be completed by year end

Work on creating an underground drainage system (UGDS), which was started by the Vellore Corporation in 2008, will be completed by the end of this year. This statement was made by Mayor P Karthiyaiyini after hoisting the tricolour on the occasion of Independence Day on Thursday.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, she said UGDS work was halted due to the delay in getting permission from the National Highways Authority of India ((NHAI). The permission to carry out work on NHAI roads was received recently and hence the work was progressing, she said, adding that the project would be completed by the yearend.

Earlier, Karthiyaiyini requested councillors and the public to cooperate in installing rainwater harvesting structures in buildings so that rainwater from the monsoon could be saved and utilised later own.

Deputy mayor V D Dharmalingam was also present.
