Vinodhini’s killer awarded life term, 2-year RI

In a verdict that could bring some relief to acid attack victim J Vinodhini’s family, the Additional Sessions judge on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment and two years of rigorous imprisonment, each running concurrently, to Suresh Kumar alias Appu (32) for throwing acid on the 23-year-old techie.

As the final hearing and clarification pertaining to the case were completed at the Karaikal sessions court on August 12, the case had come up for judgment. Additional Sessions Judge N Vaidyanathan pronounced Suresh Kumar guilty and under IPC section 302 (Punishment for murder) sentenced him to undergo life imprisonment. For causing grievous injuries to the victim’s father and his friend, Suresh Kumar was also charged under IPC section 324 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons) on two counts and sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment. A fine of `1 lakh was also slapped on him, on the default of which he has to undergo a further imprisonment of three years. In the amount, `50,000 has to be paid to the victim’s family as compensation.

About nine months ago, Vinodhini was waiting to board a bus from the Karaikal bus terminus when Suresh Kumar threw acid on her for rejecting his marriage proposal. Three months after the attack, which left her blind and disfigured her face, she died at a hospital in Chennai.

As the judgment was delivered within three months from the start of the trial, the victim’s family said it would bring peace to the deceased.
