Legislation to regulate acid sale in pipeline, says L-G

Having witnessed a gruesome incident of acid attack in which a young software engineer from Karaikal lost her life, the UT administration, in its bid to regulate sale of acid, is mulling stricter laws, said Lieutenant Governor Iqbal Singh.

He was addressing a gathering during the International Women’s Day celebrations, organised jointly by the Department of Women and Child Development and the All India Radio (AIR), here on Friday.

The L-G said that the Puducherry administration would formulate a policy to strictly regulate sale of acid in the Union Territory and to compensate the victims of acid attacks.

“Unfortunately, Puducherry has been a witness to a gruesome incident, in which the life of a young software engineer, Vinothini, was lost. The perpetrator of the barbaric act would be brought to justice, to serve as a deterrent,” he said, conveying his deepest condolences to the family members of Vinothini.

The L-G said that the security system would be strengthened to provide a safe environment for women. “Imparting values from childhood and awareness programmes specifically targeted towards youth through various organs of the government, would be organised to prevent atrocities against women.”

He said that in Puducherry, the sex ratio was 1,038.

Chief Minister said that his government was committed to the progress of women and added that more schemes were required for for their welfare.
