Former CM arrested for holding road roko

Opposition leader V Vaithilingam, among 60 Congressmen, was arrested when they resorted to a road blockade demanding shifting of liquor shop situated close to the East Coast Road at the Samipillaithottam here on Thursday.

Vaithilingam had raised the issue in the State Assembly, when it was in session in July last. He said the public was against setting up liquor shop in the area.

Meanwhile, the private-owned bar went ahead with the setting up of shop on the side of the  busy ECR and pujas were conducted on Wednesday. Viathilingam pointed out that as per court directions, the liquor shops were not allowed to function on busy roads, such as national highways. Over 100 partymen, led by Vaithilingam, staged road blockade at Sivaji Ganesan statue junction on ECR. Police, rushed to the spot held and talks, but the protesters refused to disperse. Sixty workers including 20 women were arrested.
