As many as 364 antique copper coins dating back a few centuries were unearthed from the Kovipaththu village near Vedaranyam taluk of the district on Saturday.

The incident came to light on Saturday evening as a group of workers involved in a construction activity of a house in Kovilpaththu village encountered a centuries-old clay pot under the ground.

According to sources, Anbazhagan (62) son of Viswananthan from Kovilpaththu village has been in the process of constructing a rest room at the backyard of his house. On Saturday evening, while digging up a hole 5.5 feet deep, one of the construction workers Krishnamoorthy (56) hit upon an antique clay pot lying in the ground. Upon unearthing the dilapidated pot, he found the copper coins inside.

Upon hearing about the information, Village Administrative officer Anantharasan and Revenue Inspector Ramesh visited the spot and recovered the copper coins from the workers.

According to the civic officials, since the exact era of the coins are yet to be ascertained, an archeological study is expected to be conducted in the ensuing days. The unearthed copper coins have been securely placed with the Vedaranyam Tahsildar office.
