A 68-year-old man who had sexually tortured his 38-year-old niece was lodged in Central prison after the woman levelled a charge against the accused with the City Commissioner of Police, Shailesh Kumar Yadav, recently.

On January 6, the woman had lodged a complaint with the Commissioner stating that her paternal uncle, Kalyana Sundaram, a retired government employee of Medavakkam, in Chennai, who was in Tiruchy on new year eve, sent a letter to her to accompany him for the celebration.

The complainant who is also a mother of two kids stated that Kalyana Sundaram had insisted that she have sex with him. She also stated that he had mentally harassing her on several occasions.

The Commissioner, who received the complaint, forwarded it to the all women police station in Srirangam where inspector Maragatham conducted an investigation and registered a case against Kalyana Sundaram under IPC Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and Section 4 of Women Harassment Act. “We have secured him from Chennai and conducted interrogation. We have also sent the letter for forensic report to Madurai,” inspector Maragathan said. Later, he was produced before the Judicial Magistrate and was lodged in Central prison on January 8.

In the preliminary investigation, it came to light that Kalyana Sundaram has sexually assaulted the woman in 2011 after offering her coffee mixed with sedatives. She had stated in the complaint that he  had allegedly videograped her while she was in an objectionable pose and was further threatening her to yield to him. Tiruverumbur police registered a case in July 2012. However, the accused was not arrested then.
