HC grants interim stay on prosecution of Vijayakant

The Madras High Court today granted an interim stay on a Tamil Nadu government order for the prosecution of Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly and DMDK founder Vijaykant for his alleged defamatory speech against Chief Minister Jayalalithaa at a public meeting.

Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar stayed the November 16 government order which had said it was expedient and necessary that the DMDK leader should be prosecuted for "defamation".

The government order cited the allegedly defamatory speech made by the actor-politican in Virudhunagar town on August three last year on the law and order situation and corruption.
