The Union government has revoked the detention of PMK MLA ‘Kaduvetti’ J Guru under the National Security Act NSA) in connection with the violence in Marakkanam.

In a telegram to the State Home Secretary, the Union Home Affairs Ministry informed on July 1 that following a representation from Guru, the Centre had revoked the detention under Sec 14(1) of the National Security Act.

Guru might be released forthwith from prison unless he was required to be kept in the jail for any other case. He might be tried in the cases registered under the normal law of the land, the telegram added. Guru alias Gurunathan, already under arrest on charges of hate speech, was detained under the National Security Act by the orders of the Kancheepuram District Collector  on May 10 this year.

He filed a  petition in the Madras High Court challenging his detention under the NSA. The matter was pending. While so, he sent a representation to the Union government. Acting on this, the Centre revoked the detention order.
